bus no. 46

Wade and I have pretty much mastered the Nairobi public transportation system...
Well, ok, we have a pretty solid grasp on it.

See, we're not talking about metro system here, with maps and electronic payment. Oh no, we're talking matatus- ghetto vans that actually seat 14 but usually carry about 15 or 16. Where you're essentially sitting in the lap of a stranger, where there are no maps and really no roads (open fields and sidewalks are fair game), where the prices fluctuate depending on, well, nothing, where buses with the same numbers go different routes. Compared with our first introduction when we blindly followed our guides with mouths gapingly wide open- we are now very proficient. We can get ourselves to most places we want to go whenever we need to, and we even know the swahili slang lingo so we don't get screwed over for our muzungu-ness.

But sometimes when you're feeling pretty confident, you take chances you shouldn't.
We decided (too quickly) to take our chances on a new bus.

It didn't work out.

It also starting raining.

Rain means mud.

So the only time we've ever been lost in a month and a half- it's pouring, and we're a mile from home (we think?)

We gave all the Africans very very good laughs.
